The problems with my camera and film

Wed May 24, 2006, 5:19 AM
After spending a good bit of money on developing film and camera, I have noticed a few problems.

First, the viewfinder is slightly left of the lens, and as a result, an object I wanted in the centre moves to the right. A bugger, as I've a fair few photos that have suffered because the composition was off thanks to that technical detail. A similar problem is that vertical composition goes out the window when using the camera on its side to take vertical pics.

Second, the artificial intellegence of the camera that gauges the distance of an object and the requirement of a flash is not too reliable. If centred in on a strong light (candle flame) then the camera will not flash on it's own accord. In addition, many photos that were within the minimum range for firing photos came out blury, either due to an unstable mini-tripod or being outside the minimum effective range (the one in which objects blur because they are too close)

And woe betide the person who takes C41 b&w film to be developed at your local chemist. The prints will be tinted in a certain shade, a very slight and subtle (but nonetheless present) red in some of my shots. And I did ask for Black and White prints like the guide warned me.

On the sbjuct of film, you would be wise to stay away from Fuji Neo-Pan black and white, as the graniness will vary with the level of insufficient light. Or at least keep the pics small and simple. 10" by 8" is a bit much.

I can't wait to get a SLR when my ship comes in. In the mean time, I'll stick to wide shots and landscapes while learning to take shots with the real time feature.
